INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI TREATMENT)

What is ICSI Treatment ?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a medical procedure that will help a couple to conceive by increasing the chances of fertilization.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a medical procedure that will help a couple to conceive by increasing the chances of fertilization.

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is a medical procedure where the process of fertilization of the sperm and egg take place in a laboratory under a microscope. This is the technology that has proven to be the most effective method of assisted reproduction.
The term ‘in vitro’ literally means ‘in glass’ derived from the early biological experiments that involved cultivating tissues outside the organisms in beakers, test tubes or petri dishes. Similarly, any biological substance grown outside the living organism is termed as in vitro to distinguish it from in vivo procedure where the tissues grow normally inside the organism without any assistance.

In these cases, ICSI Treatment is usually performed along with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help fertilize the egg.

ICSI Treatment has proved beneficial to patients who were not possible to conceive earlier. It has even proved effective in patients with immobile sperm. In some cases, it has been used as an option to treat a few genetic problems in the embryo.

Who needs ICSI Treatment?

Doctors might recommend ICSI Treatment for patients experiencing the following:

  • Very low sperm count.
  • When the sperm cannot move properly or are in other ways abnormal. due
  • Sperm has difficulty in attaching to the egg.
  • Eggs have not fertilized by traditional IVF, regardless of the condition of the sperm.
  • Presence of high levels of antibodies in the semen
  • A previous fertilization failure attempt while using conventional IVF.
  • A blockage in the penis that stops the sperm from coming out.

ICSI Procedure

The normal ICSI Procedure comprises the following steps:

  • The sperm is first collected from the male patient. The semen is obtained either by masturbation or collected from his testes through a small incision.
  • The next step is the ovulation and the egg retrieval from the female patient. This is usually done after injecting the female with Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) for a couple of weeks. This results in the production of multiple eggs. The egg is left to mature.
  • The matured egg is then held with a specialized pipette. A very delicate, sharp, and hollow needle is used to immobilize and then pick up a single sperm.
  • This needle is then carefully inserted through the egg’s outer layer into the cytoplasm of the egg.
  • The doctor will now inject the sperm into the cytoplasm. The needle is then removed carefully.
  • The eggs are checked the following day for signs of normal fertilization.

Risks

ICSI Procedure fertilizes nearly 50% to 80% of the eggs. But, there are rare chances of the following problems to occur during or after the ICSI Procedure:

  • Some or all of the eggs may be damaged.
  • The egg might not grow into an embryo even after it is injected with sperm.
  • The embryo may stop growing.
  • It can cause major birth defects in rare cases.
