Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a medical procedure that will help a couple to conceive by increasing the chances of fertilization.
The process of fertilization occurs when the male sperm fuses with the female egg. Initially, the head of the sperm will attach to the outside of the egg. Once attached, the sperm pushes through the outer layer to the inside of the egg (cytoplasm), where fertilization takes place.
Sometimes, the sperm cannot penetrate the outer layer, for a variety of reasons. The egg’s outer layer may be thick or hard to penetrate or the sperm may be unable to swim.
In these cases, ICSI Treatment is usually performed along with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help fertilize the egg.
ICSI Treatment has proved beneficial to patients who were not possible to conceive earlier. It has even proved effective in patients with immobile sperm. In some cases, it has been used as an option to treat a few genetic problems in the embryo.
