It is said that one in eight women face difficulty in bearing a child due to different infertility issues. In most cases, people go for infertility tests after trying to conceive for one year. Both men and women are subjected to fertility tests and if the problem is found in the woman, then the next step is to find the exact cause for infertility so that it can be solved. Hysteroscopy is a recently emerged diagnostic and treatment procedure for various gynecological and infertility problems.
Hysteroscopy is an excellent procedure that helps the doctor to clearly examine the uterus otherwise known as the womb. During the procedure, the hysteroscope (a thin tube with a light and camera on the end) is inserted through the vagina and cervix. Hysteroscopy provides a closer look into the woman’s reproductive organ and can help to identify the cause of infertility. It is carried out either to diagnose or to treat the condition.
At Aikya Fertility Center, our specialist uses hysteroscopy to diagnose and treat fertility problems.
Hysteroscopy in diagnosing and treating infertility
The main issues related to infertility in women are a premature ovarian failure, blockage in the fallopian tubes, endometriosis, problems with the uterus or ovulation problems. Hysteroscopy is used by doctors to observe the uterine cavity and to identify the reason for infertility and to treat it. The procedure is carried out on a day care basis without any incisions as hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through vagina and cervix. Some conditions which are diagnosed and treated by hysteroscopy are:
- When a woman has difficulty in bearing a child due to blockage in the fallopian tubes, Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation is suggested. Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation opens the blockage in the fallopian tubes.
- Hysteroscopy is also considered for women with septate uterus where there is a septum inside the uterine cavity. It is an abnormality in the uterus which happens during fetal development before birth. Women with the septate uterus are at an increased risk of miscarriage. Hysteroscopic septal resection can correct this deformity without an abdominal incision.
- The presence of adhesions in the uterine cavity does not allow implantation of embryo, thereby leading to infertility. Hysteroscopy is the gold standard for accurate diagnosis and treament of intrauterine adhesions.
- Fibroids in the uterine cavity and cervical canal can cause infertility. Hysteroscopic removal of fibroids also can be done depending on the location of the fibroid, thereby avoiding abdominal incision.
